Sailing School & Clinics
From introductory sailing classes to professionally coached racing clinics, the 2010 sailing school curriculum sets a new course for instruction. Sailing school sessions are 2 weeks long and are offered 4 times throughout the summer starting on June 14th.
New for the 2010 sailing season:
- Sailing School / Regatta Format - Each sailing school session is 9 days long with an optional regatta on the tenth and final day of class. This new sailing school/regatta format has been embraced by the Western Michigan Youth Sailing Association (WMYSA). This new concept in the mid-west will provide young sailors the opportunity to participate in a regatta with participants from 9 Western Michigan junior racing programs. The experience is structured to build confidence in young sailors, provide a regatta experience and expose the social side of sailing.
- Professionally Coached Race Clinics - 2 one week long race clinics and one afternoon race clinic is schedule for the 2010 season. This format greatly increases the level of instruction for the Junior Sailing Program, it staff and participants. Each clinic has been carefully selected and positioned into the 2010 curriculum to prepare sailors for specific events throughout the season.
- Clinic 1 - A week long clinic starting on June 14th with local sailor Bob Harvey. The clinic is designed as a pre-season tuner to get everyone reacquainted with race strategies, tactics and getting around the course. For those considering racing during the 2010 season, will want to attend this clinic to jump start the season.
- Clinic 2 - A week long clinic starting on July 12th by Olympic level coach Jim Young is design to optimize boat handling and speed. Jim will coach opti/prams in the morning and focus on Butterflys in the p.m. Anyone looking to race in the Butterfly Junior Nationals and/or WMYA regatta will want to take advantage of the this clinic to improve their success rate in these Western Michigan regatta classics. Jim is one of the leading Butterfly experts and coaches. (See www.jimyoungsailing.com)
- Clinic 3 - An afternoon Laser racing clinic on August 5th with (3) time Laser National Champion and author Dick Tillman. Spend the afternoon prior to the WMYSA championship learning from the Champ. The clinic will close with a practice race with Mr. Tillman on the course. Limited reservations on the historical WWII submarine Silversides are available for those wanting to spend the night on this historical boat tied up the Great Lakes Naval Museum along the Muskegon Channel. Cost for the over-night encampment is $30.
All instructors are US Sailing Certified and experienced sailors.
